Known Issues
Common Jaguar & Land Rover Faults
JLR vehicles are sophisticated machines, and certain fault patterns appear repeatedly across specific models and engine families. This guide covers the most common issues JLRMAN sees in Shropshire — what to look for, what causes them, and what the correct fix is.
Range Rover Timing Chain Problems
Affects: Range Rover L322 (3.0 TDV6), Range Rover Sport L320 (3.0 TDV6) +2 more
Timing chain stretch and tensioner failure is one of the most well-documented problems across JLR's V6 diesel engine family. The 2.7 TDV6 (built by Ford/Peugeot) and the later 3.0 TDV6 (developed in-house at JLR) both suffer from timing chain wear that accelerates when oil change intervals are extended or low-quality oil is used.

Affects: Jaguar XF (ZF 8HP), Jaguar F-Pace (ZF 8HP) +1 more
Jaguar's use of ZF 8-speed and the JLR 9-speed automatic gearboxes means that gearbox issues can affect a wide range of models. The ZF 8HP is generally a robust unit but is sensitive to fluid quality and condition — while the 9-speed automatic has a known judder and hesitation issue, particularly in early production.

Affects: Range Rover L322, L405, L460, Range Rover Sport L320, L494 +2 more
Air suspension is fitted to most Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, and Discovery 3/4 models as standard. While it provides exceptional ride quality and off-road capability, the system has several well-known failure points that are particularly common in the UK's cold and wet climate.

Affects: Range Rover L405 (SDV6, SDV8), Range Rover Sport (TDV6, SDV6) +2 more
Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) problems are one of the most common issues affecting JLR diesel vehicles in Shropshire — a county where shorter rural journeys are common and vehicles rarely reach motorway temperatures. A DPF that can't complete its active regeneration cycle will block progressively until it causes reduced performance, warning lights, and eventually a DPF replacement requirement.

Affects: Discovery 3 & 4 (2.7 TDV6), Range Rover L322 (3.0 TDV6) +2 more
The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve and cooler assembly is one of the most problematic components on JLR diesel engines. The EGR system recirculates exhaust gases back into the intake to reduce NOx emissions — but in doing so, it introduces carbon deposits and combustion by-products into the intake system, causing progressive contamination and, in some cases, catastrophic coolant failure.

Affects: Discovery 3 (2.7 TDV6), Discovery 4 (3.0 TDV6, 3.0 SDV6) +1 more
Coolant-related problems are disproportionately common on JLR's V6 diesel engines. The 2.7 TDV6, used in the Discovery 3 and early Range Rover Sport, has a particularly problematic EGR cooler that, when it fails internally, allows exhaust gas to contaminate the coolant system — leading to rapid head gasket failure if not caught early.

Affects: Range Rover Evoque L538 (2011–2015, 6-speed PowerShift), Jaguar E-Pace (9-speed automatic)
The early Range Rover Evoque (L538) was fitted with a 6-speed PowerShift dual-clutch automatic gearbox that developed a notorious judder and hesitation issue — particularly at low speeds when pulling away. This was the subject of a JLR technical service bulletin and, in many cases, was addressed under warranty on younger vehicles. However, older examples are now out of warranty and the issue persists.

Affects: Jaguar XF X250 (2008–2015), Jaguar XF X260 (2015–present)
The Jaguar XF is a sophisticated vehicle with a complex electrical architecture. While most systems are reliable, a number of recurring electrical faults are well-documented — particularly on the X250 generation where components have now aged and software updates may be outstanding.
